Golden Bears roll past Midway in RSC opener

BECKLEY, W.Va. — WVU Tech women's soccer continued its winning ways Saturday, earning a 4-1 victory over Midway University in its River States Conference opener at Paul Cline Stadium. The result marked the Golden Bears' fourth straight win and improved their record to 4-2-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.

Nora Martin-Mora Segura opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with her third goal of the year. Freshman Marcela Kalb doubled the advantage just before halftime, and after the break Tech kept the pressure on. Sophomore Julia Silva found the net in the 75th minute, while junior Korinne Potter capped the scoring three minutes later off a feed from Rocío Gutiérrez.

Midway's lone tally came in the 87th minute from Haylee Applegate, breaking up the shutout bid.

The Golden Bears controlled play throughout, outshooting the Eagles 30-2 and holding a 19-2 edge in shots on frame. Senior goalkeeper Sandra Garcia Quilez recorded one save in the win.

Opponent highlights

Midway was led by Applegate's goal, while goalkeeper Lilly Riordan kept the score respectable with 14 saves against a barrage of Tech chances.
