COLUMBUS, Ind. – WVU Tech softball opened River States Conference (RSC) play Friday with a doubleheader split at Columbus East High School, earning a 9-3 victory in game one before Indiana University Columbus responded with a 2-1 extra-inning win in the nightcap. The Golden Bears move to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in RSC play.
Game 1 – WVU Tech 9, IU Columbus 3
The Golden Bears broke open the opener with a strong offensive showing, collecting 11 hits in the win.
WVU Tech struck first with two runs in the third inning, highlighted by RBI production from Hailea Skeens and Brenna Reedy.
The Golden Bears added another run in the fourth, then delivered their biggest frame in the fifth. WVU Tech plated three runs in the inning to extend the lead and put the game out of reach.
Reedy paced the offense with four RBIs on two hits, while Tori Wells finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Peyton Hudnall also had a big day at the plate with three hits and two runs scored.
In the circle, Meghan Gill went the distance, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out one to earn the complete-game victory.
Game 2 – IU Columbus 2, WVU Tech 1 (8 innings)
The nightcap turned into a pitching duel that stretched into extra innings.
After six scoreless frames, WVU Tech took the lead in the seventh when Ashleigh James launched a solo home run to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 advantage.
IU Columbus answered in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game and force extras.
The Cougars then pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single to secure the walk-off victory.
Skeens led the Golden Bears with two doubles in the game, while Taylor Scott delivered a strong outing in the circle, allowing just two runs across 7.1 innings.
