Howell Honored as RSC Athletic Director of the Year

BECKLEY, W.Va. -- WVU Tech's Kenny Howell has been selected as the 2025-26 River States Conference Athletic Director of the Year, an honor voted on by his peers. The recognition marks Howell's second time receiving the award after also being honored during the 2019-20 academic year.

Howell has dedicated nearly two decades to WVU Tech Athletics, serving in a variety of roles before becoming Director of Athletics in 2013. His experience as a student-athlete, coach, sports information director, compliance administrator and athletic director has given him a unique understanding of collegiate athletics and the people who make it successful. That background has shaped a leadership style rooted in collaboration, service and a genuine commitment to student-athletes, coaches and staff.

Under Howell's leadership, WVU Tech Athletics continued its upward trajectory during the 2025-26 academic year. The Golden Bears produced one of the most successful seasons in department history as the men's soccer team advanced to the NAIA National Championship match and finished as national runner-up with a 20-1-2 record. The department also celebrated its first CSC Academic All-American®, multiple NAIA All-Americans, national qualifiers in swimming, track and field and the NAIA Marathon Classic, along with postseason appearances across numerous programs. WVU Tech esports teams also reached multiple conference semifinals and national quarterfinals, reflecting Howell's commitment to providing opportunities and support across all sports.

What truly sets Howell apart is his servant leadership. He is the type of athletic director who will assist wherever needed, whether helping at a conference championship event, supporting game day operations, solving unexpected challenges behind the scenes or simply being present for his coaches and student-athletes. He leads with humility, communicates openly and consistently places the success of others ahead of his own. His focus extends beyond wins and losses, emphasizing academic achievement, personal growth and creating an environment where students can thrive.

Howell's impact extends well beyond WVU Tech. He serves as Vice Chair of the River States Conference Administrative Council, Conference Golf Liaison and a member of the conference Conduct Committee. He is also active in southern West Virginia through his service as Treasurer of the YMCA of Southern West Virginia and as a board member of the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center. Whether strengthening the conference, building community partnerships or enhancing opportunities for student-athletes, he approaches every responsibility with professionalism, integrity and purpose.

Perhaps the strongest measure of Howell's leadership is the respect he has earned from those around him. He is a trusted colleague, a supportive supervisor and a steadfast advocate for student-athletes. He leads without seeking recognition, preferring instead to celebrate the accomplishments of others. Through his steady leadership, commitment to service and dedication to the mission of intercollegiate athletics, Howell has helped position WVU Tech Athletics for continued success while exemplifying the qualities recognized by the River States Conference Athletic Director of the Year award.
