Three Golden Bears score in road win at Pikeville

Women's Soccer

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — WVU Tech women's soccer answered an early deficit with three unanswered goals Saturday afternoon, earning its first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over the University of Pikeville at Bob Amos Park. The Golden Bears scored once before halftime and added two more after the break to move to 1-1 on the season.

Pikeville took the lead in the 11th minute when Rebekah Christopher scored off an assist from Jayla Boyd. Tech began finding chances as the half went on, with Rocío Gutiérrez putting a shot on goal in the 23rd minute and Carson Barr forcing another save with a header in the 30th.

The Golden Bears broke through just before halftime. Sarah Dasilva, who entered in the 25th minute, scored at 43:54 to send Tech into the break tied 1-1. It was the first goal of the season for both Dasilva and WVU Tech.

Tech grabbed the lead in the 60th minute when Gutiérrez found the back of the net to make it 2-1. The Golden Bears continued to push late, with Julia Silva having a shot blocked in the 81st minute before Korinne Potter struck the crossbar in the 84th.

Silva put the match away in the 89th minute, scoring at 88:58 for Tech's third goal of the afternoon. She followed with another shot on goal seconds later as the Golden Bears closed out the 3-1 road victory.

Silva led WVU Tech with three shots, putting two on goal, while Gutiérrez finished with two shots, two on goal and a goal. Dasilva added two shots and scored the equalizer. Tech finished with an 11-10 advantage in total shots and put six attempts on goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Irene Saldaña finished with six saves over 90 minutes as the Golden Bears held Pikeville scoreless for the final 79 minutes.

The win puts WVU Tech at 1-1 overall and gives the Golden Bears their first victory of the 2026 season. Through two matches, Tech has scored three goals on 15 shots, with eight shots on goal.

What's next

WVU Tech stays on the road Tuesday, Sept. 1, when the Golden Bears travel to Milligan College, Tennessee, to face Milligan University. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
