Tech Players Earn All-American and All-Academic Accolades

CHARLESTON, W. Va. - The United States Collegiate Athletic Association announced the 2013 USCAA National All-American and All-Academic teams Wednesday evening.

WVU Tech is proud to have multiple students who have earned these accolades through perserverence and hard work, on and off the field.

Student-athletes earn All-Academic honors by being an upperclassmen who has earned a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher over the course of their academic career. The Golden Bears landed six student-athletes on this list.

The USCAA honors 15 First Team, 15 Second Team, and several Honorable Mention student-athletes for their outstanding performance on the field/court for each sport to make up the All-American team. The men's soccer team of WVU Tech boasted four players on the All-American team.

Tech volleyball player, sophomore Jacque Carroll earned All-Academic honors this 2013 season. Carroll put down a career-high 18 kills against Glenville State, October 15. The sophomore ended the season with 144 digs and 142 kills.

Men's soccer earned five spots on the All-Academic team this year, including four sophomores and one senior. The sophomores include Sam Laughton, Ridge Ramsey, Drew Lytton, and Felipe Sozinho. Senior Mario Paz rounds off the list.

Laughton played in 15 games, scoring 13 goals for the Golden Bears in 2013, also dishing out three assists. Ramsey scored a goal and marked an assist October 4 against Penn State Hazleton, recording two assists total as a sophomore.

Lytton plays right back for the Golden Bears, helping the team's defense this season, allowing only 17 goals scored. Sozinho grabbed an assist against Ohio Christian August 31.

The midfielder, Paz recorded an assist against Concord University in the Golden Bear victory, September 21.

The All-Americans for WVU Tech include First Team, seniors Joe Jackson, Tyler Fabian and Dennis Fuerst. Senior Raul Martin earned Honorable Mention accolades.

Jackson led Tech with shots on goal with a percentage of 0.645. Jackson scored 19 goals in 2013 and has scored 47 goals total during his four-year career at WVU Tech.

Fabian scored 13 goals in 19 games played this year. The senior topped the charts for Tech with 13 assists.

The German native, Fuerst led the Golden Bears with 23 goals also marking 10 assists. Fuerst scored the game-winning goals in the semi-final and final of the USCAA National Championship Tournament.

Martin was a strong leader for the Golden Bears, controlling the ball as a center back. The senior scored a goal against Penn State Hazleton October 4.
