BECKLEY, W.Va. — WVU Tech men's soccer opened River States Conference play with a 3-2 victory over Midway University on Saturday afternoon at Paul Cline Stadium. The Golden Bears extended their unbeaten start to 6-0-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.
Freshman Julen Recalde delivered the difference, scoring twice including the eventual game-winner in the 62nd minute off an assist from senior Julian Diaz. Recalde first leveled the match in the 34th minute, converting a feed from freshman Gonzalo Sabeh just 2:44 after Midway had taken the early lead.
Moments later, freshman Leny Duperray struck for his team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 35th minute, finishing off a pass from freshman Hugo Roman to send Tech into halftime up 2-1.
Midway equalized in the 68th minute through Brayden Gillman, but Tech's defense held firm the rest of the way behind senior goalkeeper Luka Felix, who posted one save across 90 minutes. The Golden Bears controlled the match with a 12-4 advantage in shots, including 8-3 on goal, and earned seven corner kicks to the Eagles' three.
Opponent highlights: George Spencer netted Midway's opening goal in the 32nd minute with an assist from Rhys Dickson. Gillman tallied the second goal, while goalkeeper Landon Sorrell finished with five saves.
