Men's Soccer Picks Up Two Wins

CHARLESTON, West Virginia - WVU Tech men's soccer tested themselves, playing two games Wednesday while celebrating their seniors. The Golden Bears took two victories, 3-1 vs. Davis & Elkins College, the first win over the Senators in program's history, and defeated Penn State Beaver, 13-0 in the nightcap.

Tech, recently voted second in the United State Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) coaches poll, now holds a record of 12-1-1 in 2014. The Golden Bears boast a seven game win streak and rank second in the USCAA in overall goals scored with 89.

Seniors Craig Mitchell, Juan Suarez, Bryce Davenport, Zach Carnahan, Roberto Martinez and Glenroy Miller were celebrated at halftime of the Penn State Beaver game in front of friends and family at Schoenbaum Soccer Complex.

For the noon game, the Gold and Blue saw three different scorers in junior Joao Gigli and freshmen Alex Pastor and Pepe Segarra. Pastor also marked an assist, his seventh of the season, while sophomore Daniel Ramirez and fellow classmate Morten Larsen tallied an assist each.

The Senators got on top first, scoring off a corner kick in the 19th minute with the Golden Bears retaliating at 35:50 when Segarra netted his goal. Defense for both teams held strong, keeping the score knotted 1-1 until Pastor, in the 82nd minute, and Gigli, at 84:17, gave Tech two goals for the win and the first victory vs. the NCAA DII foe in the program's history.

Sophomore goalkeeper Hunter Moles earned the win with two saves and just one goal allowed.

In the final game of the day, nine Golden Bears netted goals including a hat trick from junior Sam Laughton. Miller and Pastor also scored multiple goals for the team with two a piece.

Sophomore goalkeeper Renato Gomes drew the start and the win in 58:51 minutes of play, freshman Pol Bernaldo also made an appearance in the net, playing 31:09 minutes for Tech.

The team will head to Michigan Oct. 18-19 to face Cleary University and Andrews University respectively for their next set of games.
