Men's Soccer Cruises to 9-0 Win over UPIKE


CHARLESTON, West Virginia - Freshman Sven Biansumba scored three goals Sunday afternoon against the University of Pikeville in the WVU Tech 9-0 victory. The goals scored by Biansumba included his first collegiate goal and helped the Golden Bears in moving to 3-1 this season. UPIKE is now 1-2.

Tech also saw outstanding contributions from junior Sam Laughton and freshman Adric Armstrong-Bellosta. Laughton finished the match with two assists and a goal while Armstrong-Bellosta had one of each.

The Golden Bears struck fast when freshman Morten Larsen dished the ball to junior Joaquin Rodriguez in the ninth minute to put Tech up 1-0. Following suit closely, freshman Alex Pastor posted his second goal of the season from one of Laughton's assists in the 11th minute. Laughton's final assist of the game came after a Golden Bear corner kick, connecting with junior Juan Suarez who found the back of the net, taking the score to 3-0 with 19:43 left to play in the first half.

Biansumba would collect his first goal of the day in the 36th minute with an assist from freshman Miguel Casado. The final Gold and Blue goal of the first half came from sophomore Junior Osei-Tutu, taking the score to 5-0 after 45 minutes of play.

Laughton would join in on the goal scoring just 4:36 into the second half by teaming up with freshman Pepe Segarra, who marked the assist, to net his second goal of the season. Biansumba scored his second and third goals in the 69th and 85th minute by way of Armstrong-Bellosta and sophomore Tobee Oleyele. Armstrong-Bellosta grabbed his first career goal with an assist from freshman Roberto Martinez in the 78th minute. 

The Golden Bears outshot UPIKE 31-2 also holding advantage in corner kicks, 13-2.

Larsen led the team with five shots while Biansumba, Pastor and Suarez tallied four each.

Freshmen Pol Bernaldo and Vicente Porcar and sophomore Renato Gomes combined for a team shutout of Pikeville with Bernaldo moving to 1-0 on the season.

Tech has a full schedule of road contests next week, starting with Ohio Valley University Monday. The team will then travel to face Penn State York, Bryant & Stratton College and finish the week with a Saturday showdown against 2013 USCAA National runners-up, University of Maine at Fort Kent.

The Golden Bears finished their 2013 campaign with a National Championship and a 2-1 victory over UMFK.
