WVU Tech Extends Win Streak to Three, Sweeps D&E

EAST BANK, West Virginia - The WVU Tech baseball team swept Davis and Elkins College Saturday afternoon in their first two contests of a four-game series. The Golden Bears extend their win streak to three with the 9-3 and 2-1 win over the Senators, boosting their record to 15-13.

On the mound, senior Craig Johnson (2-2) scored the win in game one, while junior Kyle Sager (4-1) pitched for the win in the night cap, both throwing complete games.

Tech finished with 11 hits for the win with juniors Hugo Rodriguez, Josh Hudson, Tommy Weaver and Xavier Barriere registering two hits a piece.

Sophomore Jayson Sykora went 1-for-3 at the plate, recording a double, an RBI and a run.

Junior Carlos Diaz and Hudson posted a home run each, Diaz earned two RBI while Hudson had three RBI on those swings.

Johnson did 7.0 innings of work, scattering 10 hits while striking out eight Senators and giving up two earned runs.

Rodriguez had another multiple hit game for the Golden Bears, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate. Sophomore Heath Utterback was a perfect 2-for-2 at bat Saturday.

Barriere had two hits, scoring both runs in the victory, including the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning, crossing the plate on a Senator wild pitch.

Freshman Ian Southcott posted the lone Golden Bear RBI off a sacrifice hit in the bottom of the third inning.

Sager struck out four batters while giving up just six hits and one earned run for the complete game.

The Gold and Blue will finish the series in Elkins, West Virginia tomorrow, Sunday, first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
