Tech Wins on Homecoming, Williams Reaches Milestone

Men's Basketball

MONTGOMERY, West Virginia -- WVU Tech (2-1) defeated Point University (1-4) Saturday afternoon 117-80 in front of a Homecoming crowd and Head Coach Bob Williams moved into second place on Tech's all-time win list in men's basketball.  Williams' 219 wins surpasses the late Tom Sutherland (218 wins), who had tremendous success on the Montgomery campus in the 1980's.

Williams is the longest tenured men's basketball coach in school history as he is now in his 15th season on the Golden Bears' sideline. Tech legend Neal Baisi is the all-time leader in wins at Tech with 263.

"I was glad Tech won today and anytime you have longevity you reach some milestones," stated Williams, who has 332 collegiate wins overall while coaching at Jefferson CC (NY), Glenville State and Tech. "I'm proud to be the coach here and humbled to have added somewhat to Tech's rich basketball heritage. The lineage of coaches and players here is amazing. Tom Sutherland was a friend and was so encouraging to me and the basketball program. He did a remarkable coaching job at Tech."

For Homecoming, the university welcomed many former Golden Bear basketball players back to campus. One in particular, Darryl Slack, played in the annual alumni game and then coached his Point University squad against his alma mater.

"It was a special day for Tech Basketball. I'm so proud of Darryl, he was a tremendous player for Tech and I know he will have a long and successful career in coaching," said Williams.

Slack was a team captain for the Gold and Blue, scored over 1,000 points in his career and graduated in 2010. He scored 31 points in a Tech win over NAIA No. 1 ranked Mountain State University in the Beckley Armory (January of 2009). Slack has been an assistant coach at Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State (GA) and Pfeiffer (NC) before being named head coach at Point in May of 2016.

During the game, Tech saw double-digit scoring from five Golden Bears including a 11-for-16 effort from the field for junior Elisha Boone towards his 26 points. Fellow classmate Ryan Atkins went 9-for-12 from the field and 4-for-5 from the bonus line, ending with 23 points after 33 minutes of play.

The other big offensive contributors for the Golden Bears included junior Michael Scott (18), freshman Junior Arrey (13) and junior Enson Garcia (13).

On the boards, Scott pulled down a game-high eight rebounds while Boone and junior Kievonn Banks had six each. Garcia grabbed five boards.

Boone led the team with five assists while junior Cole Schoolcraft and Arrey dished four each.

The Gold and Blue finished 42-for-68 (61.8 percent) from the field while the Skyhawks shot 23-for-55 (41.8 percent).

As a team, Tech held the advantage in points off turnovers (24-22), second chance points (17-16), bench points (47-21), points in the paint (60-28) and fast break points (6-4). WVU Tech also held the advantage on rebounds (40-29) while forcing 19 miscues and grabbing eight steals.

The squad will return to the court Wednesday, November 16 when they travel to Mount Vernon Nazarene University for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
