Tech Sweeps Cincinnati Christian, Extends Streak to 11

EAST BANK, West Virginia — The WVU Tech baseball team completed the conference series sweep of Cincinnati Christian University with 4-0 and 9-0 shutout victories Saturday afternoon at the Douglas M. Epling Field. Tech defeated CCU on Friday with scores of 11-2 and 23-3.

The Golden Bears, who are enjoying an 11-game winning streak, now hold a record of 29-12, 18-6 (KIAC) while the Eagles are 3-35, 2-22 (KIAC). Tech is currently No. 2 in the KIAC while the Grenadiers of (RV) Indiana University Southeast are on top with a record of 19-1.

Junior Tanner Levine had a standout series for WVU Tech, finishing 10-for-17 at the plate with eight RBI. The Long Beach, California native recorded three home runs in the four-game series including a grand slam in game two and two dingers, one over the left field wall and the other over the opposite wall, in the series finale. The left hander also posted a triple and a double towards his eight runs scored.

Levine currently has a batting average of .432 and a slugging percentage of .664 while holding three top-30 rankings in the nation (NAIA DI). The son of Terri Kerr is No. 15 with 5 triples, No. 21 for his batting average (.432) and No. 29 for .122 triples per game.

The Golden Bears managed six hits in the 4-0 shutout over the Eagles. Junior Sebastian Gomez Herrera paced Tech with two RBI off a 1-for-2 effort at the plate. Herrera plated Levine and junior Trevor Lam off a double in the fourth.

Tech's first score came in the first inning when senior Josh Hudson singled to right field to drive in fellow classmate Dylan Harvey. Senior Doug Prather brought in the final run of the game in the sixth inning when he knocked a sacrifice fly that crossed freshman Anferny Ellis.

On the bases, Harvey (1) and Ellis (2) recorded stolen bags. Harvey, who hails from Richmond, Virginia, is currently ranked No. 28 in the country with 22 total stolen bases.

Hudson moved to 6-2 on the bump after a complete game and a career-high 11 strike outs. The South Charleston, West Virginia native gave up just two hits in the shutout victory for his second scoreless win this season.

Levine, Lam and junior Brady Groesbeck had multi-hit games for the Gold and Blue in the series finale including a perfect 4-for-4 effort from Levine. Levine had three RBI and three runs scored off of two home runs and a double.

Lam had a double and a RBI while Groesbeck scored two runs. Senior Tommy Weaver marked three RBI while Hudson and Prather had one each.

Senior Kyle Sager (6-1) was awarded the win after 5.0 innings of work on the mound. Sager struck out six batters while giving up three hits. Senior Brandon Tucker and Herrera both saw an inning of action, retiring one batter each via strikes.

The team will next travel to St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, North Carolina for a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday.
