Neto Nets Two, (RV) WVU Tech Defeats No. 19 Cumberland

Men's Soccer

LEBANON, Tennessee -- (RV) WVU Tech (1-0) men's soccer started off their season with a 3-2 victory over No. 19 Cumberland University (1-0) Friday afternoon in Lebanon, Tennessee.

Junior Francisco Neto, who finished last season ranked No. 7 in the nation (NAIA DI) in goals per game with 1.110, netted two of Tech's goals in the win while freshman Eduardo Gutierez posted his first collegiate goal.

Gutierez struck in the third minute off the perfect pass from Neto to put the Golden Bears up early. Neto's first goal was unassisted in the 32nd minute before the Rio de Janeiro, Brazil native followed that up in the second half (57') with a header goal and the assist from sophomore Álvaro Adán.

Tech's defense was able to stop the Phoenix until the second half when Danny Williams marked two scores for Cumberland (60' and 66').

Senior goalkeeper Hunter Moles (1-0) recorded the win after eight saves in 90 minutes of play.

As a team, the Gold and Blue were outshot by Cumberland 19 (10) - 9 (6).

The Golden Bears will return to action with their home opener in Beckley, West Virginia Monday, when they host Spring Arbor University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Paul Cline Memorial Complex.
