MONTGOMERY, West Virginia -- Junior
Elisha Boone had a standout game, pouring in 18 points while pulling down 16 rebounds to help No. 25 WVU Tech defeat Bluefield State College 86-74 Tuesday evening. The Golden Bears, who have won eight of their nine last games, now hold a record of 12-5 while the Blues move to 2-13 this season.
The game marks the final contest WVU Tech will compete in at the Baisi Athletic Center with a past rival West Virginia team. The programs, Tech and Bluefield State, have competed against each other since 1955 (62 years) when the Blues joined the former West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC).
Boone finished 6-for-8 from the bonus line towards his double-double effort while also dishing a game-best six assists. The 16 boards Boone posted gave the guard a new career-high.
Junior
Ryan Atkins led all Tech scorers with 22 points to go with five rebounds. Atkins finished 6-for-7 from the foul line and is shooting 81.6 percent from that spot this season. The Miami, Florida native is currently ranked No. 20 in the nation (NAIA DII) in points per game with 21.063.
Freshman
Junior Arrey also showed up at the foul line, finishing 8-for-10 towards his 11 points in the win. Senior
Ra'Shaud Kincaid recorded nine points and junior
Kievonn Banks had seven for the Gold and Blue.
The Golden Bears also won under the boards, grabbing 44 rebounds compared to Bluefield State's 28. Tech forced 18 miscues and picked up six steals.
The squad, who was voted No. 25 in the NAIA DII Coaches' Top 25 poll Tuesday, will return to River States Conference play when they travel to the University of Rio Grande Saturday for a 4 p.m. tipoff.
