Golden Bears battle for 3-2 victory to advance to semifinal

River States Conference Tournament

RICHMOND, Indiana -- No. 3 seed (East) WVU Tech (24-13) took No. 2 (West) Brescia University (22-14) to five sets and came away with a River States Conference (RSC) Tournament quarterfinal victory, 3-2, Friday afternoon in Richmond, Indiana. Tech's next challenge will be No. 1 (East) Indiana University East (19-18) tomorrow, Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in a semifinal.

The Golden Bears defeated the Bearcats after set scores of 22-25, 25-18, 25-16, 16-25 and 15-11.

Sophomore Katelyn Byrd led the Gold and Blue's attack with 21 kills while picking up four digs and assisting on two blocks. Freshman Sawyer Hawgood finished with 17 digs and five assists.

Senior Bailey Lotozo and junior Ana Monteiro, who was named Tech's Champion of Character Friday afternoon, produced 14 kills each. Monteiro also had a team-best 20 digs for the double-double to go with three block assists. Lotozo had eight digs and two service aces.

Sophomore Carolina Bologna led the block with two solo and three block assists. Bologna also recorded eight kills, six digs, two assists and a service ace. Fellow classmate Konstantina Pateli, named to the RSC first team, handled the ball for the Golden Bears marking a game-high 49 assists while posting 16 digs and three block assists.

The last time Tech and IU East met (September 23), the Golden Bears dropped the battle, 3-2. After the Gold and Blue took the first two sets, 25-23 (each), IU East answered back with three straight wins, 21-25, 21-25 and 15-17.
