PIKEVILLE, Kentucky -- WVU Tech women's basketball ended 1-1 after Friday and Saturday contests during the Walters Auto Classic hosted by University of Pikeville. The Golden Bears (4-4) fell to Campbellsville University (6-0) 94-73 before defeating the host school, Pikeville (4-4) 76-71.
Tech had a balanced offensive attack against UPIKE with five Golden Bears hitting double-digits including 15 points each from junior
Alexandra Combs and sophomore
Laura Requena. Requena also pulled down a game-best 11 rebounds towards a double-double.
Junior
Savannah Shamblin poured in 14 points while senior
Zjhane West and sophomore
Katelyn Byrd had ten points each. West dished a team-best five assists while Shamblin marked four assists towards the team's 11 total.
Tech forced 21 Pikeville miscues and picked up 12 steals including four from West and three from senior
Melissa Bakowski.
As a team, Tech finished 43.1 percent (31-for-72) from the floor while their opponent shot 43.9 percent (25-for-57). The Golden Bears held the advantage in points off turnovers (31-20) and points in the paint (32-26).
Tech will next travel to Kingsport, Tennessee for the NAIA DII Showcase where they will face Union College (November 24) and Southeastern University (November 25).
