WVU Tech shoots, rebounds past Point Park men, 98-79

Men's Basketball

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania -- WVU Tech used hot shooting and a big rebounding edge to beat Point Park University, 98-79, in a River States Conference (RSC) men's basketball game on Saturday at CCAC-Allegheny's Physical Education Building.

WVU Tech (7-3, 2-0 RSC) made an amazing 11 3-pointers in the first half to stake out to a 53-40 lead after 20 minutes. The Golden Bears were shooting 61 percent (11 for 18) from 3-point range and 56 percent overall at the half. Andreas Jönsson was the main marksman putting up 20 of his 22 points in the first half and drilling six treys before the break.

The Pioneers (3-6, 1-1 RSC) were in decent shape when they cut the lead to 10 points at 55-45, early in the second half. That was after an ideal start to the period with a trey by Michael Connor and a basket by Aaron Barlow. Connor ended with 18 points on 6 of 11 from the floor and 4 for 6 from long range. Barlow totaled nine points and 11 rebounds.

But WVU Tech, which made 16 of 32 treys on the day, got back into a shooting streak to essentially put the game out of reach. Of the five made 3-pointers in the second half by the Golden Bears, four of them came during a 20-6 run that made the score 75-51 with 13:45 left. Point Park then got as close as 19 the rest of the way, including the final score.

Michael Scott had a huge game for WVU Tech with 20 points and 23 rebounds. The 6-8 forward led the Golden Bears to their 51-30 advantage on the boards. He ignited the 20-6 run with a 3-pointer, one of his four treys in the game. Tamon Scruggs made three treys during the spurt and four on the day on his way to 20 points.

WVU Tech shot 53 percent for the game compared to 41 percent for Point Park. The Pioneers were 10 of 30 from 3-point range.

Tech will take a week off before returning to the court for a home contest Tuesday, December 12 when they play host to RSC opponent Ohio Christian University (3-6, 0-1 RSC). Tech's Sports Information Department will provide live coverage found at goldenbearathletics.com/coverage.
