Tech falls to UC, 9-8, at Coker Spring Tournament

HARTSVILLE, South Carolina -- WVU Tech softball fell in game one of three during the Coker Spring Tournament to NCAA DII opponent University of Charleston, 9-8, Friday evening in Hartsville, South Carolina. The Golden Bears are now 0-5 while the Golden Eagles move to 1-1 in this young season.

Sophomore Skylar Connelly launched a three-run homerun to right center in the top of the sixth to give Tech an 8-6 lead but UC retaliated with a two-run homerun and a walk off single that drove in the winning run to capture the victory in the bottom of the seventh.

Connelly finished 2-for-4 at the plate including a double, four RBI and two runs scored. Junior MaKayla Waugh was a perfect 3-for-3 at bat while scoring three runs.

Freshman Ashley Daniels recorded a stolen base, a RBI and run scored off of a hit.

Freshman Karina Atanacio (0-3), who pitched 5.0 innings, scattered nine hits and six earned runs while striking out three Golden Eagles for the loss.

Senior Mackenzie Wilson threw for 1.1 innings, retiring two batters while giving up three hits and two earned runs.

The Gold and Blue will finish out the tournament tomorrow, Saturday with game one against Columbus State University (11 a.m.) followed by the night cap versus King University (5 p.m.).
