Softball competes at Coker Spring Tournament

HARTSVILLE, South Carolina -- WVU Tech softball dropped two games on Saturday during the Coker Spring Tournament hosted by Coker College in Hartsville, South Carolina. The Golden Bears (0-7) dropped game one 9-1 to Columbus State before falling in the night cap, 9-0, to King University.

Freshman Ashley Daniels knocked her first collegiate home run for Tech's score against Columbus State. Daniels, who hit the homer in her first at bat of the game, finished 1-for-3 at the plate with a RBI and run scored.

The Golden Bears managed five more hits, to total six, including a 2-for-3 effort from junior Kayla Jones.

Seniors Lexi Huck and Genna Trippett and freshman Annika Ponton recorded a hit each.

Trippett (0-1) pitched 2.0 innings for the loss, giving up five hits and two earned runs.

Freshman Sydney Smith threw for 3.0 innings, scattering eight hits and six earned runs while sophomore Kaitlyn Sisler put in 1.0 inning of work for two hits and one earned run.

The Cougars finished with eight RBI off of 15 hits including two home runs.

Game Two | King 9, WVU Tech 0 (Five Innings) | Box Score

Tech registered three hits in the loss including one each from sophomore Skylar Connelly, Daniels and Huck. Connelly marked a double and a stolen base in the night cap.

Senior Mackenzie Wilson (0-3) drew the start in the circle and pitched 4.1 innings for the loss. Wilson struck out one batter and gave up eight hits and five earned runs.

Atanacio threw for 0.2 innings, giving up three hits and one earned run.

The Tornado managed 11 hits and eight RBI in the win including three runs brought in from Candace Maness' home run.

The team will face King again when they travel to Bristol, Tennessee for their next doubleheader on Thursday, March 2.
