BECKLEY, West Virginia -- WVU Tech volleyball hosted its annual Pink Game where they earned a 3-0 shut out River States Conference (RSC) victory over Midway University in Van Meter Gymnasium Saturday. After scores of 25-11, 25-10 and 25-22 the Golden Bears move to 22-7, 6-4 (RSC) while the Eagles now hold a record of 6-18, 3-6 (RSC).
The team was able to raise money for the CAMC Breast Center in Charleston, West Virginia from the help of many sponsors and the dedication of the Golden Bears and their fans. This fundraiser is a part of Tech's annual Pink Game and the Gold and Blue continue to raise more money each year for the center.
Senior
Ana Monteiro had a standout game with a double-double effort of 11 digs on defense and ten kills on offense. The Rio de Janeiro, Brazil native also posted three assists and a block solo.
Junior
Carolina Bologna finished 8-for-16 towards a .438 hitting percentage while recording three digs and two each of service aces, block solos and block assists.
Fellow junior
Konstantina Pateli had 15 assists to go with five kills and six digs. Freshman
Michaella Guyot-Polverini had four assists and three digs for Tech.
Junior
Katelyn Byrd picked up 11 digs and had three assists while also putting down four kills, a block solo and a block assist.
Sophomore
Sawyer Hawgood tallied nine digs while freshman
Valentina Abondano had eight digs. Hawgood also had two assists in the win while Abondano posted a service ace.
As a team, Tech currently holds four top ten rankings in the nation (NAIA) including No. 6 in total kills (1,279), No. 7 in total assists (1,170), No. 8 in total service aces (187) and No. 9 in total blocks (207.5).
Individually, Pateli is No. 8 in total assists (943) and No. 24 in assists per game (9.820), Bologna is No. 32 in total blocks (89), Abondano is No. 44 in total service aces (36), Hawgood is No. 45 in total digs (415) and Monteiro is No. 47 in total service aces (35).
After this weekend's conference action, WVU Tech is now No. 3 (EAST) in the conference standings, two matches behind Point Park University and Indiana University East.
The team will host consecutive home match six-of-seven on Friday, October 19 when Brescia University (14-13, 5-4 RSC) travels to Beckley for a 7 p.m. contest.
