Women's basketball extends winning streak to six

BECKLEY, West Virginia -- WVU Tech women's basketball is enjoying a six-game winning streak after defeating University of the Virgin Islands in a non-conference game Thursday evening. The Golden Bears now hold a record of 7-5 while the Buccaneers move to 4-12.

Senior Alexandra Combs had a career night, posting 23 points including a 6-for-10 effort from three-point range. The Southgate, Kentucky native also marked six assists, four steals and five rebounds.

Sophomore Whittney Justice came off the bench to pour in 17 points including finishing perfect from the foul line (6-for-6) and beyond the arc (3-for-3). W. Justice also had four rebounds, three assists and a block.

Senior Savannah Shamblin finished with 16 points to go with nine assists, two rebounds and a steal. Junior Laura Requena recorded 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting while pulling down four rebounds and dishing an assist.

Under the boards, junior Logan Dudley led the way for Tech grabbing nine rebounds to go with six points and two blocks. Sophomore Brittney Justice posted eight rebounds and nine points.

The team shot a very efficient 93.8 percent (15-for-16) from the bonus line while finishing 51.5 percent (34-for-66) from the field and 50.0 percent (14-for-28) from three-point range.

Tech held its opponent to 34.1 percent (29-for-85) shooting from the field while forcing 17 turnovers and grabbing seven steals. The Buccaneers did hold the slight advantage in rebounds, 47-45.

Virgin Islands was led by Skyler Hatfield and Kysha Barbel who had 14 points each.

The Golden Bears return to River States Conference (RSC) play Saturday when they trave to Point Park University.
