RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- WVU Tech men's basketball defeated University of Rio Grande, 91-86, in River States Conference (RSC) play Saturday. The Golden Bears boost their record to 16-9, 9-4 (RSC) while the RedStorm move to 9-17, 4-9 (RSC).
The Gold and Blue finished an impressive 90.0 percent (27-for-30) from the foul line including an 11-for-11 effort from junior
Thomas Collins while fellow classmate
Brandon Shingles finished 7-for-7.
Shingles led all scorers with 28 points including five made from beyond the arc. Collins recorded 19 points for WVU Tech.
Senior
Michael Scott, who now has 12 double-doubles this season and recorded his fifth consecutive, poured in 21 points to go with 11 rebounds.
The Syracuse, New York native currently (as of February 3) holds four top-15 rankings in the nation (NAIA DII) including No. 10 with double-doubles (12), No. 10 in defensive rebounds per game (6.958), No. 14 in total rebounds (235), No. 15 in total rebounds per game (9.333).
Freshman
Tamon Scruggs finished with nine points and five rebounds while sophomore
Dominik King marked six points and two blocks.
As a team, Tech shot 47.5 percent (28-for-59) from the field while the RedStorm finished at 49.2 percent (32-for-65). The Golden Bears did dominate the boards, pulling down 41 rebounds compared to Rio's 24.
Tech will look to keep this three-game winning streak alive when they travel to Ohio Christian University for more conference play Tuesday, February 6.
