  • Dealt No. 21 University of Rio Grande its first River States Conference (RSC) loss after defeating the Redstorm 76-58 Saturday afternoon.
  • A balanced offense helped lead the Gold and Blue past Rio including a 31-for-61 (50.8 percent) effort from the field.
  • Freshman Whittney Justice was a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc and led all scorers with 15 points.
  • W. Justice also had three steals, two assists and two rebounds.
  • Sophomore Laura Requena posted her sixth double-double this season with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
  • As of February 3, the Madrid, Spain native is No. 38 in the nation (NAIA) with 3.08 offensive rebounds per game and No. 43 with 197 total rebounds.
  • Fellow classmate Logan Dudley was 5-for-7 from the field, posting 11 points to go with four rebounds.
  • Sophomore Katelyn Byrd and freshman Alexandria Gray recorded ten points each.
  • Byrd finished with four rebounds while Gray pulled down five boards to go with three steals and four assists.
  • Senior Zjhane West and freshman Brittney Justice both had three steals towards Tech's 13 total and six points each.
  • West also finished with four rebounds and two blocks.
  • Junior Alexandra Combs dished four assists, scored four points, grabbed three steals and posted two blocks.
  • The Golden Bears shot 71.4 percent (10-for-14) from the bonus line while the RedStorm finished at 66.7 percent (16-for-24).

  • Defeated University of Rio Grande, 91-86, in River States Conference (RSC) play Saturday.
  • The Golden Bears boost their record to 16-9, 9-4 (RSC) while the RedStorm move to 9-17, 4-9 (RSC).
  • The Gold and Blue finished an impressive 90.0 percent (27-for-30) from the foul line including an 11-for-11 effort from junior Thomas Collins while fellow classmate Brandon Shingles finished 7-for-7.
  • Shingles led all scorers with 28 points including five made from beyond the arc. Collins recorded 19 points for WVU Tech.
  • Senior Michael Scott, who now has 12 double-doubles this season and recorded his fifth consecutive, poured in 21 points to go with 11 rebounds.
  • Freshman Tamon Scruggs finished with nine points and five rebounds while sophomore Dominik King marked six points and two blocks.
  • As a team, Tech shot 47.5 percent (28-for-59) from the field while the RedStorm finished at 49.2 percent (32-for-65).
  • The Golden Bears did dominate the boards, pulling down 41 rebounds compared to Rio's 24.

LAST SEASON AT AAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Men's Swimming
  • Locked up the 2017 AAC Men's Swimming Championship on Saturday, edging out second-place Asbury University by only 24 points.
  • The meet was held at the Kingsport Aquatic Center in the HMG Competition Pool in Kingsport, Tennessee
  • The Golden Bears maintained first place throughout the three-day event, but Asbury was continually hot on its tail.
  • Tech won with 633 total points, while Asbury compiled 609 total points.
  • St. Andrews University took third place with 556 points while Union College (461), Point University (303) and Milligan College (295) rounded out the field.
  • Golden Bear champions that were crowned included:
Women's Swimming
  • Earned runners-up in the AAC Championships held at the Kingsport Aquatic Center over three days.
  • The Golden Bears finished with 488 team points while AAC champions, Asbury University, produced 606 team points.
  • Union College ended up in third at 464 points, while Columbia College took fourth with 444 points.
  • Milligan College (354.5), St. Andrews University (309.5) and Point University (246) rounded out the field.

LAST MEET
  • Juniors Daniel Lynch (Shot Put, 16.63 meters) and Dan Nehnevaj (3,000 Meter Run, 8:48.27) took first place in their respective events.
  • Women's Highlights:
    • In the Distance Medley Relay, freshman Jaelynn Parks earned a new PR in her 1,600 meter leg with a 6:08.71.
    • Senior Kylie Lang finished fourth in the 500 Meter Dash, finishing with a time of 1:31.31.
    • Lang also place seventh in the 1,000 Meter Run.
    • Freshman Makenzy Mandeville placed sixth in the 3,000 Meter Run.
  • Men's Highlights:
    • Lynch's throw moves him to seventh in the nation (NAIA).
    • Nehnevaj's run is a new personal record for the junior.
    • Senior Douglas Negrete ran to a fourth place finish in the 3,000 Meter Run.
    • Freshman Nyhne Daniel took third (23.93) and sophomore Joseph De La Cruz was seventh (24.42) in the 200 Meter Dash.
    • N. Daniel also finished fifth in the 55 Meter Dash with a time of 6.73.
    • Junior Zuberi Idy jumped to a fifth place finish in the Triple Jump at 12.77 meters.
    • In the weight throw, junior Seth Greensage tossed a 14.25 meters to finish in third.

2018 RSC PRESEASON POLL
  • The 2018 River States Conference (RSC) Baseball Preseason Coaches' Poll has picked IU Southeast as this year's conference favorite.
  • The Grenadiers ended last year ranked No. 15 in the final NAIA Top 25 poll and were within one game of the NAIA World Series.
  • WVU Tech reached the conference tournament finals last year and was picked fifth this year.
  • The Golden Bears received 50 votes and were 31-28 overall, 18-12 RSC last year.
