Tech drops conference series at IU Southeast

NEW ALBANY, Indiana -- WVU Tech softball traveled to Indiana University Southeast Sunday, dropping a River States Conference (RSC) series after doubleheader scores of 4-3 and 8-4. The Golden Bears now hold a record of 7-19, 1-3 (RSC) while the Grenadiers move to 10-10, 6-2 (RSC).

Tech tallied ten hits as a team including two each from junior Kacie Cahill, seniors MaKayla Waugh and Hannah Calhoun and sophomore Ashley Daniels.

Three doubles were recorded by the Golden Bears, one each from Cahill, Calhoun and freshman Olivia Morey.

The team produced three RBI including two from Waugh and one from Morey.

On the bases, Cahill recorded her sixth steal in 2018.

In the circle, sophomore Amanda McDonald was dealt the loss after throwing a complete game. McDonald struck out five batters while giving up four earned runs.

Sophomore Karina Atanacio and freshman Lauren Oxford knocked two-bag hits.

Junior Skylar Connelly was the lone Golden Bear to have a multi-hit game, posting two towards the team's total of six.

Oxford, who was 1-for-2 at the plate, marked two RBI while Waugh and Morey drove one run in a piece.

Connelly and freshman Alexis Lopez both recorded a steal.

Atanacio, who threw for 4.1 innings, earned the loss after giving up seven earned runs and striking out two Grenadiers.

McDonald also posted two strike outs, throwing for 1.2 innings.

Tech will take a break from conference play when they host University of Pikeville for their home opener Tuesday. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at noon at Woodrow Wilson High School.
