Golden Bears fight to secure doubleheader sweep over OCU

BECKLEY, West Virginia -- WVU Tech softball earned a doubleheader sweep against River States Conference (RSC) foe Ohio Christian University Friday afternoon in walk-off fashion both contests including a 2-1 ten inning decision in the night cap. The Golden Bears (20-26, 9-7 RSC) took game one 2-1 over the Trailblazers (17-19, 5-13).

The Gold and Blue have now won nine of their ten last games and will conclude the regular season tomorrow, Saturday with a home doubleheader against Cincinnati Christian University (19-16, 8-8). Tech will celebrate their seniors, Hannah Calhoun, Kayla Harbin, Kayla Jones and MaKayla Waugh.

In the bottom of the seventh, Tech turned its early season losses into lessons with heads up base running to even the score 1-1 when sophomore Ashley Daniels crossed on a wild pitch.

The winning run was plated by freshman Olivia Morey who drove the ball down the left field line and scored junior Sarah Dohn to end the game and mark the team's lone RBI.

Sophomore Karina Atanacio (10-10) grabbed the win the circle after three innings of work and two strike outs.

Fellow classmate Amanda McDonald drew the start, throwing for four innings towards a strike out.

Both teams added a run to the scoreboard in the third inning including a single to left field from junior Skylar Connelly that crossed junior Kacie Cahill. Cahill found her way on base by a walk and added a stolen base to her stats.

It was in the bottom of the tenth that the Golden Bears clinched the conference sweep with another walk-off effort where Jones knocked a single to right field that scored freshman Alexis Lopez. Lopez got on with a picture perfect bunt while also recording a steal.

Atanacio recorded the win in game two as well, recording six strike outs after six innings of work. McDonald pitched for four innings and retired three batters via strikes.

Tech is currently tied for fourth in the conference with Point Park University (12-18, 9-7 RSC), five games back from (RV) University of Rio Grande (30-11, 14-2 RSC). Cincinnati Christian shares fifth place with Carlow University in the RSC standings after splitting with Asbury University April 21.
