Tech picks up three wins at Marietta River City Classic

Volleyball

MARIETTA, Ohio -- Golden Bear volleyball finished 3-1 after two days at the Marietta River City Classic in Ohio. WVU Tech defeated the host school, Marietta College (3-1), Franciscan University (3-1) and Emory & Henry College (3-0) before falling to Earlham College (2-3).

Tech moves to 6-3 this season and will continue play Tuesday, September 4 when they travel to Union College.

The attack at the classic was led by senior Ana Monteiro who put down 42 kills. Junior Katelyn Byrd and sophomore Ana Alonso Olea followed with 33 each.

Junior Carolina Bologna also made a difference on the attack, recording 28 kills to go with 21 defensive digs and 21 block assists.

Junior Konstantina Pateli was on top with assists, tallying 125 at 8.3 per set while freshman Michaella Guyot-Polverini had 25 assists. Pateli also marked 14 kills and four service aces.

The back row was protected by sophomore Sawyer Hawgood who picked up a team-high 68 digs, averaging 4.3 per game. Monteiro also contributed to the back row defense, posting a total of 59 digs while freshman Valentina Abondano had 36.

Junior Alice Amitrano finished with 34 digs and four service aces. Fellow classmate Emily Kidd blocked (solo) a team-best eight attempts to go with eight block assists and 23 kills.
