Volleyball crowned SMWC Classic Tournament Champs

SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Indiana -- Golden Bear volleyball went undefeated, 3-0, during the SMWC Classic in Indiana Friday-Saturday to earn the title of tournament champions. WVU Tech defeated Midway University (3-0), Oakland City University (3-0) and the host school, Saint-Mary-of-the-Woods College (3-0).

Junior Katelyn Byrd had a standout showing, being named to the all-tournament team along with just three other players -- Kristen Schorr (Oakland City), Kylie Flatt (Midway) and Monica Mack (SMWC). Byrd finished with 25 kills, nine digs, three block solos, a block assist, two assists and a service ace.

Senior Ana Monteiro posted 30 kills over three matches. Monteiro also recorded 22 digs, seven assists, four service aces, three block assists and a block solo.

Freshman Valentina Abondano had 22 kills while juniors Carolina Bologna and Emily Kidd posted 19 kills each over the two-day tournament.

Junior Konstantina Pateli produced 88 assists for the Gold and Blue while also posting 29 digs, six service aces, six kills and a block solo.

Sophomore libero Sawyer Hawgood led all three matches for WVU Tech with a total of 40 digs during the tournament.

After scores of 25-11, 26-24, 25-20 (Midway), 25-20, 25-22, 25-22 (Oakland City) and 25-15, 25-18, 25-13 (SMWC), the Golden Bears are enjoying an eight-match winning streak and will continue play Tuesday, September 18 when they travel to University of Rio Grande to kick off their River States Conference (RSC) schedule.
