Golden Bears open season at Brewton-Parker College

MOUNT VERNON, Georgia -- WVU Tech baseball kicked off its 2019 campaign at Brewton-Parker College Friday by sweeping the Barons, 2-0. The Golden Bears took game one 9-5 before scoring a 10-5 W in the night cap. Tech now holds a record of 2-0 while the Barons move to 0-5.

The teams will complete the four-game series tomorrow, Saturday in Mount Vernon, first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Sophomore Andrew Sharp led Tech at the plate with seven RBI, three hits, two doubles and a run scored. The W's on the mound were awarded to sophomores Brett Linton (G1) and Calyb King (G2).

Tech totaled nine hits and nine RBI including a four-RBI game for Sharp who finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a double.

Junior Robert Funk was 2-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored while also posting a double.

Fellow junior Dariel Torres marked the Golden Bears' first long ball of the season, posting a home run in the second inning.

Senior Sean Crosby crossed a run, finishing 2-for-3 while at bat.

Runs were also scored by sophomores Kent Rooklin (3) and Calen Owens and juniors Kurt Latocha (2) and Cody Hammond.

Left-handed pitcher, Linton drew the start on the mound, pitching 4.0 innings for the W. Linton gave up five hits and two earned runs while striking out one batter.

Sophomore Will Mullins (1.0 innings) and freshman Zach Eppard (2.0 innings) also pitched for Tech, both posting a strike out.

Nick Curtis took the loss for Brewton-Parker. He went 4.0 innings, allowing six runs on five hits and striking out one Golden Bear.

The Gold and Blue posted ten more RBI to finish Friday's doubleheader. Sharp recorded a double, a run scored and three RBI.

Junior Douglas Pollock had a double and two RBI while Torres also knocked a double to go with two runs scored and a RBI.

Funk, junior Patrick Burke, freshman Jake Allen and senior Corey Lewis drove in one run a piece.

On the bases, Douglas (2) and Funk posted steals.

In the field, the Golden Bears committed zero errors in game two as well as the season-opener.

King was awarded the pitching win after 3.1 innings, six strike outs and four earned runs.

Senior Casey Elbin tossed for 1.2 innings towards two strike outs and fellow classmate Juan Perez finished the game, retiring three Barons via strikes.

For the Barons, Royce Grinaker suffered the loss after pitching two-thirds of an inning, allowing three runs on three hits.
