BECKLEY, West Virginia -- No. 1 (East) WVU Tech men's basketball took down No. 4 (West) Brescia University 99-87 in a quarterfinal of the River States Conference (RSC) Championship Wednesday evening. The Golden Bears will next host No. 2 (West) Asbury University in a semifinal Saturday, February 23.
Tech enters the semi with an overall record of 27-4 while the Eagles, who defeated No. 3 (East) Rio Grande 83-65 in a quarterfinal, are 21-9 so far this season. The Gold and Blue defeated Asbury 97-84 January 18 in Wilmore, Kentucky during the regular season.
Senior
Elisha Boone led all scorers and rebounders with his 19
th double-double of the season with 27 points and 12 boards. Boone also posted six assists and a steal.
Fellow classmate
Brandon Shingles hit six from three-point range towards 23 points to go with two rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Senior
Tommy Collins finished with 14 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Sophomore
Junior Arrey had 13 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Sophomore
Tamon Scruggs came off the bench, finishing a perfect 5-for-5 from the field towards 11 points. Scruggs also had three rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Freshman
Josh Whelan picked up eight rebounds and six points.
As a team, Tech shot 46.7 percent (35-for-75) while the Bearcats finished at 43.7 percent (31-for-71). The Golden Bears also had a slight advantage under the boards, 46-40.
Tipoff for Saturday is scheduled for 3 p.m. in the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.
