BECKLEY, West Virginia -- WVU Tech men's soccer earned a 1-0 overtime victory to open up the 2019 season Saturday afternoon. The Golden Bears, who received votes in the preseason NAIA Coaches Poll, defeated Union College.

In the 94^th minute, senior Manuel Garcia posted the golden goal off the assist of fellow classmate Sergio Sanchez.

Garcia and senior Jesus Naves both led the team with two shots on goal while seniors Gavin Shiels and Alvaro Tina had one on frame each.

Protecting the net, senior Jorge Martinez (1-0) stopped five Bulldog attempts while allowing zero goals in the complete game.

Union's keeper, Filipe Barateiro, was forced to make three saves and allowed one goal.

The Gold and Blue will return to the field Thursday, September 5 when they host Montreat College at 7 p.m. in Beckley.
