Fifth set comeback lifts Golden Bears past Rio

RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- Golden Bear volleyball split (1-1) on the first day of the Emileigh Cooper Memorial Classic, falling to Shawnee State University 0-3 (15-23, 22-25, 23-25) before battling to a 3-2 victory over host school University of Rio Grande (25-23, 21-25, 25-16, 21-25, 16-14).

Over both matches, sophomore Madison Boswell led the attack with 22 kills and averaging 3.14 per set.

Ana Muniz Rocandio finished with a double-double of a team-high 31 digs to go with 21 kills. The junior also had two blocks, an assist and a service ace.

Also hitting double-digits in the kill column were seniors Brooklyn Cook with 17 and Coralys Maldonado Rivera with 14. Cook picked up five digs while Maldonado Rivera put down a team-best three blocks.

Sophomore Brooke Presley finished with 23 digs, five service aces and two kills while junior Emma Leach posted 16 digs.

Freshman Ally Morris dished out 42 assists while junior Julia McClanahan had 34 assists, three kills and three digs.

The Gold and Blue will continue play in Rio Grande tomorrow, Saturday when they face Point Park University at noon.
