Golden Bears earn home-opening doubleheader sweep

CHARLESTON, West Virginia -- WVU Tech baseball opened at home, GoMart Ballpark, and completed a doubleheader sweep in walk-off, extra-inning fashion in both contests against Lawrence Tech University Saturday. The Golden Bears move to 4-8 while the Blue Devils hold a record of 1-5 after scores of 2-1 (10 innings) and 6-4 (9 innings).

In game one, Broedy Boyce singled to right field in the bottom of the tenth for the winning RBI that drove in pinch runner Colby Fondas. Fondas replaced Tyler Wilkinson who got on after four balls.

The finale was topped off in the ninth inning of game two when Noah Lukas knocked a two-run dinger over the left field wall to drive pinch runner Fondas and himself in. Fondas was in for Wilkinson who got on via a walk again.

Over the two games, Lukas, Logan Stump and Ryan Miller had two RBI each. Lukas and Stump finished with two hits while Miller had one.

Boyce recorded two hits, a RBI and a stolen base Saturday.

Xavier Martin (2B), Francesco Calderon, Cody Cooper, Garrett Warden and Wilkinson (2B) had a hit each. Wilkinson posted a RBI for the Gold and Blue.

Carson Brown and Hunter Fansler had a stolen base each.

Wilkinson scored the W on the mound in game one, throwing for 3.0 innings and striking out one.

The winning pitcher in game two was Chase Herndon. Herndon pitched for 2.0 innings, striking out one.

Matthew Gainer got the start in game one Saturday, pitching 7.0 innings, striking out six and giving up zero earned runs.

Isaac Wengert threw for the first 7.0 innings of game two. Wengert retired eight batters via strikes and gave up zero earned runs.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow, Sunday to complete the four-game series beginning at 12 p.m. in Charleston.
