Record day as Golden Bears bump streak to five

Baseball

BECKLEY, W.Va. -- WVU Tech baseball earned a new program record and are now enjoying a five-game winning streak after outscoring NCAA DII Davis & Elkins College 40-11 with scores of 30-5 and 10-6. The Golden Bears now hold a record of 8-5 while the Senators move to 0-5.

The new record, 30 runs scored in a single game, was possible due to 29 team RBI including six dingers. One of the long balls came from junior Logan Spurlock (Charleston, W.Va.) who rocked a grand slam and hit for the cycle towards six RBI in game one. The junior finished with an .857 batting average and a total of seven RBI and six hits over both games.

Senior Francesco Calderon (Guayaquil, Ecuador) added six hits, including a home run and four doubles, five RBI and six runs scored towards a .750 average showing in the doubleheader.

Junior Hunter Fansler (Beckley, W.Va.) ended with a .571 average Wednesday, recording two home runs and five RBI. Fansler totaled four hits and four runs over two games.

Senior Ryan Miller (Hope Mills, N.C.) posted four RBI while junior Noah Lukas (Ocala, Flda.), senior Colby Fondas (Dallas, Ga.) and junior William Gray (Rockwell, N.C.) had three each. Lukas knocked a home run while Fondas and Gray each hit a double. Junior Broedy Boyce (Ripley, W.Va.) recorded a dinger and crossed the plate four times.

The W's on the mound were credited to sophomores Braedan Pakkala (Sudbury, Ontario, Canada) and Chase Herndon (Hedgesville, W.Va.) in games one and two respectively. Pakkala threw for 4.0 innings towards five strike outs and four earned runs. Herndon pitched 3.2 innings, retiring two via strikes and allowing three earned runs. The entire pitching staff totaled 13 strike outs and had a 6.43 ERA over the doubleheader.

As a team, Tech had an overall batting average of .480 and a slugging percentage of .907 after a 36-for-75 showing at the plate in 14 innings.

The Golden Bears will return to GoMart Ballpark in Charleston, W.Va. this weekend to host Lourdes University for a three-game series Saturday and Sunday.
