Wilmore announces resignation from WVU Tech

After years of dedication to Golden Bear basketball, George Wilmore has announced he will be stepping down as head coach to pursue new opportunities.

Wilmore first joined the WVU Tech sidelines as an assistant coach before taking over the program's top spot. In his time as head coach, he guided the Golden Bears to a winning record of 46-37 and two appearances in the River States Conference Tournament. As an assistant, he helped lead Tech to back-to-back conference championships and three trips to the NAIA National Championship, laying the foundation for sustained success.

His coaching journey began at Winthrop University as a student-assistant (2009-2012), followed by a successful stint at NCAA Division II Fairmont State, where he helped guide the program to a national runner-up finish and a program-best 34-win season in 2016-2017.

Wilmore's passion, leadership and commitment to student-athletes have left a lasting legacy at WVU Tech. The Golden Bear family is grateful for his contributions and wishes him the very best as he begins this next chapter.

Stepping into the interim head coaching role will be Corey Acord, who has been a valuable part of the Golden Bear staff since 2020. Benitez Jackson will also remain on the Golden Bear staff as assistant coach, solidifying a WVU Tech bench with nearly 30 years of basketball experience.

Kenny Howell, Director of Athletics, had this to say: "I'd like to personally thank Coach Wilmore for all he has brought to WVU Tech and Golden Bear Basketball. While we will miss him, we surely wish him well." Howell went on to say, "Corey Acord is a young man who has impressed us over the last five years, so this opportunity is well deserved.  Between him and Coach Jackson, our Golden Bear men are in great hands."
