Tech softball earns doubleheader split Saturday

S. CHARLESTON, W.Va. – WVU Tech softball earned a doubleheader split Saturday at Little Creek Park, taking game one 6-4 before Defiance College (Ohio) answered with an 8-0 win in six innings in the nightcap. The Golden Bears stand at 2-2 overall through the season's first weekend.

Game 1 – WVU Tech 6, Defiance 4

WVU Tech struck first in the second inning when Mia Valenzuela worked a walk and Hailea Skeens drove her home with an RBI single.

The Golden Bears added two more in the third. Kaylee Waddell tripled, then Mallie Lawson brought her home, and Valenzuela followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.

Defiance pushed across three in the fourth to tie it, but WVU Tech answered right back. Olivia Barnett tripled in the fifth and scored on Waddell's RBI groundout to regain the lead, 4-3.

Tech added an insurance run in the sixth, then Peyton Hudnall delivered a sacrifice fly in the seventh to cap the scoring at 6-4.

Meghan Gill earned the win with a complete game, allowing four runs (two earned) while working around eight hits with no walks.

Game 2 – Defiance 8, WVU Tech 0 (6 innings)

Defiance jumped out early with three runs in the first and two more in the second, then added three in the sixth to close out the nightcap.

WVU Tech collected two hits, singles from Tori Wells and Brenna Reedy.

WVU Tech heads to Indiana for its River States Conference opener with a doubleheader at Indiana University Columbus on March 6, followed by a doubleheader at Midway University (Ky.) on March 7.
