BECKLEY, W.Va. — WVU Tech Athletics has announced its Golden Bear Athletes of the Week for Sept. 14-20, recognizing freshman Irene Saldaña of soccer and senior Pelayo Castillo of golf for standout performances during the week.
Saldaña played all 180 minutes in goal for WVU Tech across matches against Cumberland and Lindsey Wilson, allowing just two goals while recording 10 saves.
The freshman posted a 1.00 goals-against average and an .833 save percentage for the week. Saldaña made two saves in a 1-1 draw with Cumberland before turning away eight shots in a 1-0 setback against Lindsey Wilson.
Saldaña is a freshman majoring in business management.
Pelayo Castillo (Oviedo, Asturias, Spain) | Golf
Castillo led WVU Tech at the Orange and Black Collegiate, finishing tied for 17th in the Golden Bears' season-opening tournament at Stonecrest Golf Course in Prestonsburg, Kentucky.
The senior finished the 54-hole event at 2-over 218 with rounds of 76, 69 and 73. Castillo's 3-under 69 in the second round was the lowest round by a Golden Bear during the tournament as he helped Tech finish 11th in the 13-team field.
Castillo is a senior majoring in mechanical engineering.
