RIO GRANDE, Ohio — WVU Tech volleyball put together several strong stretches during a four-match weekend at the Emileigh Cooper Memorial Classic, highlighted by a third-set win over Georgetown College and a tightly contested opening set against Madonna University.
The Golden Bears went 0-4 at the two-day event, moving to 0-11 overall, with matches against Michigan-Dearborn, Madonna, Georgetown and Defiance College. Across 13 sets, Tech totaled 92 kills, 79 assists, 19 service aces, 224 digs and 18 total blocks.
WVU Tech opened the tournament Friday against Michigan-Dearborn. After dropping the first set 25-13, the Golden Bears battled through a back-and-forth second that featured 10 ties and seven lead changes before Michigan-Dearborn edged Tech 25-21. Michigan-Dearborn closed the match with a 25-4 third set.
Tech came right back Friday evening with one of its most competitive stretches of the weekend against Madonna. The opening set featured 11 ties and seven lead changes before Madonna escaped with a 28-26 decision. Madonna followed with 25-14 and 25-21 wins to take the match in three.
Aniston Treadway turned in a strong all-around performance against Madonna with 12 kills and 17 digs. Ivana Burgos collected 22 digs, while Addison White contributed five kills, seven assists, 16 digs and two service aces. Anaís González handed out 10 assists and added six digs.
The Golden Bears returned Saturday morning and earned their first set victory of the weekend against Georgetown. After Georgetown claimed the first two sets, Tech responded with a 25-21 win in the third before Georgetown finished the 3-1 decision with a 25-17 fourth set. The third featured eight ties and three lead changes before the Golden Bears came away with the four-point win.
Freshman Ashlynn Whitt produced one of Tech's most efficient performances of the tournament against Georgetown, putting down four kills on six attempts without an error for a .667 hitting percentage. She also recorded 11 assists, two service aces and three digs. Gabriela Lattu led Tech with eight kills while hitting .200.
White added 16 assists, 12 digs and four service aces against Georgetown. Treadway recorded a team-high 18 digs to go with seven kills, while freshman Maura O'Niell finished with six kills and 13 digs. Burgos added 10 digs.
WVU Tech closed the weekend against Defiance, falling 25-13, 25-18, 25-15. The Golden Bears improved their hitting percentage in each set, finishing the third at .094. Treadway paced the attack with eight kills, while Lattu added five. White contributed four kills, 15 assists, seven digs and a service ace.
Burgos continued her strong defensive weekend with 21 digs in the finale. Eden Miller made an impact at the net with two solo blocks and two block assists, while Lattu added two block assists.
Over the four matches, Treadway led the Golden Bears with 33 kills and added 40 digs. White filled the stat sheet with 43 assists, 46 digs, 14 kills and eight service aces, while Burgos paced the defense with 67 digs, an average of 5.15 per set.
Miller totaled 13 blocks, including three solo blocks and 10 block assists. Lattu recorded 13 kills in nine sets, while Whitt finished the tournament with five kills and no errors on nine attacks for a .556 hitting percentage, along with 12 assists and three aces. O'Niell added 11 kills and 25 digs. As a team, the Golden Bears averaged 17.23 digs and 1.38 blocks per set during the tournament.
What's next
WVU Tech returns to action Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Glenville State University. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Glenville, W.Va.
The Golden Bears then travel to Indiana University Kokomo for a 7 p.m. match Friday, Sept. 11, before visiting Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College at 1 p.m. the following afternoon.
