CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Golden Bears of WVU Tech women's and men's swimming had a successful three-day Magnus Cup Invitational Thursday - Saturday. Tech earned time cuts, national cuts and a new school record.
The women represented with a major time cut for Andrea Segovia (500 Free) and a showing in the finals of the 50 Breaststroke from Daniela Bohr and Mia Wildman.
For the men, Donat Fabian had another standout showing, posting a new WVU Tech record in the 50 Free with a time of 20.48 where he finished second overall in a field of 30 swimmers. The Budapest, Hungary native also picked up top ten finishes in the 50 Breast (6th, 25.64), 100 Breast (6th, 56.61) and 100 IM (2nd, 51.94). Fabian hit the right number for the National 'A' Cut in the 50 Free, punching his ticket to the NAIA National Championship.
Three relay teams also earned their way to the National Championship with ‘A’ Cuts including the 200 Free Relay (1:26.85) team of Fabian, Simon Ulich, Refiloe Mashao and Guillermo Usechi, 400 Medley Relay (3:31.79) of Fabian, Usechi, Pau Eslava and Isaac Vallance and also the team of Fabian, Usechi, Eslava and Jimmy Granger for the 800 Free Relay (7:00.31). The 800 Free Relay squad was the first in the NAIA to make the cut this season.
Tech also earned a few National ‘B’ Cuts during the Magnus Cup including Granger (500 Free, 400 IM, 1650 Free), Usechi (50 Free, 200 IM), Eslava (400 IM, 1650 Free), Mashao (1650 Free) and Vallance (1650 Free).
The remaining Gold and Blue top ten finishes were credited to Granger during the 1650 Free (7th, 16:11.56), Usechi in the 100 IM (7th, 53.33) and Ulich for the 200 Breast (6th, 2:04.58).
The Golden Bears will celebrate their seniors and host Shawnee State University in the final home meet of the season Saturday, December 4.
