No. 3 WVU Tech's defense dominated No. 2 Rochester University in an opening round game of the NAIA National Championship as the Golden Bears defeated the Warriors 85-72.
Tech had five hit double-digits including a double-double effort from senior Tamon Scruggs who finished with 13 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and a steal.
Sophomore Darrin Martin came off the bench to pour in a team-best 17 points to go with three boards, three assists and two steals.
Senior Andreas Jonsson was 3-for-5 from three-point range towards 16 points. Fellow senior Juvante' Hayes posted 11 points and sophomore Ashton Parker finished with ten points.
Jonsson now has 1,000+ career points, scoring his 1,013th in the W. The Stockholm, Sweden native is currently ranked No. 9 in the nation (NAIA) with 3.5 treys made per game.
Sophomores Andrew Work and Thomas Hailey pulled down five boards each while Work had seven points and Hailey marked eight.
The team forced 18 turnovers and held Rochester to just 36.9 percent shooting from the floor and 20.0 percent from beyond the arc.
WVU Tech will next face No. 1 Shawnee State University tomorrow, Saturday at 12 p.m. in a second round match-up of the championship.
