Golden Bears stay undefeated in NACE StarLeague Fall tourney

BECKLEY, West Virginia -- The WVU Tech esports squad competing in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Premier Varsity Fall tournament are flawless at 4-0 and are currently tied for first in the East 2 Conference, even with Old Dominion University. The Golden Bears defeated Keiser University - Pembroke Pines 2-1 Thursday evening.

In the game of Smash, each individual begins with three stocks (lives) for a total of 12 team stocks. The player continues to fight until they lose their three stocks then a teammate will step in unless the match is complete. A team stays alive until the last fighter loses all of their stocks meaning the team has lost all 12 stocks in that match.

Senior Inc. (Hayden Mathers) grabbed a team-high ten stocks against over three matches.

Frickroll (Trenton Smith), a sophomore, picked up nine stocks in his first competition of the season. 

Senior cyvet (Christopher Grassi) earned eight stocks for the Gold and Blue.

A sophomore, Goemon (Elijah Brown), played to five stocks in the two matches he played.

The Plus Varsity SSBU team kicked off its Fall NACE StarLeague tournament with a loss against Concordia University - St. Paul. The Golden Bears who competed included juniors wolfwarrior1424 (Ian Shaffer) and NT Zippo (Johnathan Bill), freshman King D. Reaper (Cameron Griffin) and senior The Tyrinator (Ty Musser).

The Premier team will next face Fullsail University while the Plus team is scheduled to play Lawrence Technological College, both next Thursday at 7 p.m.
