Esports Roundup: Smash, League wins. Fortnite holds steady

BECKLEY, W.Va. -- The WVU Tech esports team kept busy during the week of October 16-22, 2023.  

The Golden Bears Super Smash Ultimate team was victorious Monday, October 16, defeating Nicholls State University 2-1. WVU Tech players Goemon (Elijah Brown, Jr.), Frickroll (Trenton Smith, Jr.), Wolfwarrior (Ian Shaffer, Jr.) and ScytheC (Clayton Wilson, Jr.)  Narrowly pulled out a game one win with Nicholls getting the win in game two. Co-captains Frickroll and Goemon decided to change the lineup for game three, which proved to be the deciding factor in getting the match win and moving to 3-1 in East Coast Athletic Conference (ECAC) play. The WVU Tech Super Smashers will take on St. Peter's University next.  

On Tuesday, October 17, the WVU Tech Rainbow Six Siege team suffered its first loss of the season against Robert Morris University by a score of 2-0, also its first loss since joining the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC). Operators Maniacal (Caleb Adkins, Sr.), Hilbert (Patrick Hilbert, Fr.), Cardinel (William Kelly-Crapse, Soph.), TheAbaW (Tamer Abdelgelil, Jr.) and Stretch (Elijah Ray Northrop, Fr.) got out to an early lead before Robert Morris adjusted, responded and contained the Golden Bears for a comeback win in game one, followed up by a more decisive victory in game two to take the match. The Golden Bear Siege team faces the Union College Bulldogs as their next opponent. 

In League of Legends action (ECAC) Friday, October 20, summoners xKDrgn (Jaden Lagos, Sr.), Bean (Benjamin Lowe, Soph.), KingCool9001 (Ethan Cole Workman, Jr.), pompie (Anthony Pompie, Fr.) and Hilbert (Patrick Hilbert, Fr.)  played against Merrimack College in their week four match. The Golden Bears took game one in under 18 minutes to go up 1-0 in the best-of-three contest. Merrimack made substitutions and were much better in game two, getting the win and tying the match at 1-1 before WVU Tech would grind out a game three win to take the match, moving them to 2-2 on the season. They'll meet the University at Albany next on October 27.  

The WVU Tech Fortnite Blue duo of Dr. Unrushed (Ryan Hayden, Fr.) and TheWacki1 (Keith Karwacki, Fr.) returned to action in week two of the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) No-Builds Duos Open Series Saturday October 21st. The two were looking to continue trending upwards following a mid-pack finish in week one. They would get off to a good start in round one of four with a 19th place out of 50 finish and two eliminations. Round two also yielded positive results, with a 17th place finish and one elimination. The good luck began to run out in round three, with a 24th place finish followed up with a 29th in round four, both with no eliminations. They played primarily in the Brutal Bastion region during all four rounds. Overall, the freshmen remain in the mid-pack area, finishing week two in 34th out of 70.
