Golden Bears split at OnSet tourney to open season

Volleyball

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- WVU Tech volleyball started the 2023 season splitting, 1-1, during the OnSet tournament hosted by University of Saint Francis Friday. The Golden Bears fell to the host school 1-3 (17-25, 18-25, 26-24, 17-25) before picking up the first W this season against Indiana University Northwest 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-22).

Junior Brooke Presley (Ghent, W.Va.) picked up 30 digs to lead the back row defense for the Gold and Blue. Presley also produced three assists.

On the attack, senior Ana Muniz Rocandio (Oviedo, Asturias, Spain) led the way with a total of 22 kills to go with 25 digs, two assists and a service ace.

Junior Madison Boswell (Ronceverte, W.Va.) put down 16 kills while sophomore Emily Stack (Beckley, W.Va.) posted 15 and fellow classmate Nevaeh Wooding (White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.) produced 10 kills Friday.

Wooding dominated at the net with six total blocks (2 BS, 4 BA). Boswell had four block assists and Stack finished with two block assists. 

Senior Julia McClanahan (Charleston, W.Va.) dished out 31 assists while freshman Marianna Oyola Rivera put out 22 assists for Tech. Both setters added three service aces to their stat line Friday too.

The Golden Bears will finish out the two-day OnSet Tournament tomorrow, Saturday (August 19, 2023) with two more matches -- Indiana Tech (9:00 a.m.) and Bethel University (1:15 p.m.). Live coverage will be available at goldenbearathletics.com.
