Golden Bears sweep Sacred Heart for first Smash win

Esports

BECKLEY, W.Va. — WVU Tech esports locked in its first ECAC Super Smash Bros. Ultimate victory of the season Friday night, rolling to a 2–0 sweep over Sacred Heart University in remote play from the Golden Bear Esports Lab.

The Golden Bears exploded out of the gate in Game One, powered by a commanding opening from Ralph Aaron Etaba Ateba (Wreck). The freshman Terry player took three stocks off King K. Rool and one from Kirby to set the tone early. Evan Ingram (Dunks) followed with a standout seven-stock run using Falco, clearing Kirby, Lucina, and pushing deep into Sora's stocks. Clayton Wilson (ScytheC) then finished the job with Bowser, knocking out Sora to seal a 12–6 opener.

Game Two brought another balanced team effort. Wreck again led off strong with four stocks, eliminating Lucina and taking one from King K. Rool. Wilson added two more as Bowser before Rylan Ellison (RyeBread) surged in with Joker, taking out Sora and adding another stock off Robin. Tyler Vines (Typoint5) closed the match with R.O.B., knocking out Robin to lock down a 12–11 game and the 2–0 match victory.

🕹 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 101

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a fast-paced fighting game where players aim to knock opponents off the stage rather than deplete a health bar. Each fighter begins with three stocks (lives), and the higher their damage percentage, the farther they fly when hit. Losing all three stocks eliminates a player for that round.

At the collegiate level, teams play in crew battles with four players per side and a shared pool of 12 total stocks. When one player is eliminated, the next teammate enters, and the match continues until one team loses all 12 stocks. The format rewards strong openers, dependable anchors, and smart character counter-picks.

WVU Tech competes in ECAC Division B (Group 1), facing schools from across the country in weekly best-of-three matchups. All matches are played remotely from the Golden Bear Esports Lab in Beckley and stream live at twitch.tv/wvutechgoldenbears.
