BECKLEY, W.Va. – WVU Tech women's basketball battled on the glass and at the free-throw line but came up short in an 82-69 loss to Shawnee State University on Thursday afternoon in River States Conference play at the Beckley Raleigh County Convention Center.
The Golden Bears moved to 12-7 overall and 3-6 in conference action, while Shawnee State improved to 16-5 overall and 7-2 in the RSC.
Shawnee State built a five-point lead after the first quarter and extended the margin to 41-33 at halftime. WVU Tech stayed within striking distance through the second half, cutting the deficit to three points midway through the fourth quarter, but the Bears were unable to close the gap late.
WVU Tech turned in one of its strongest rebounding performances of conference play, finishing with 18 offensive rebounds, a total higher than Shawnee State's season average allowed. The Golden Bears also matched Shawnee State on the boards overall and converted 71.4 percent at the free-throw line, exceeding the Eagles' opponent free-throw percentage entering the game.
Golden Bear Highlights
Emmanuella Amaefula led WVU Tech with 15 points and a team-high five assists.
Cadence Stewart finished with 14 points, knocking down four three-pointers.
Alexis Sexton and Alaira Evans added 12 points apiece, with Evans also pulling down six rebounds.
Maggie Boroski chipped in 10 points off the bench, while Kyra Brown scored seven points.
