Golden Bear softball battles to split on opening day

S. CHARLESTON, W.Va. – WVU Tech softball earned a doubleheader split Friday at Little Creek Park, falling 10-1 in the opener before erupting for a 14-13 walk-off victory in game two against Bluefield University (Va.).

The Golden Bears move to 1-1 overall to open the 2026 season. The nightcap marked Interim Head Coach Kyleigh Jackson's first win as a collegiate head coach.

Game 1 – Bluefield 10, WVU Tech 1

Bluefield capitalized on early miscues and steadily built separation in the opener.

The Rams struck for two runs in the first inning and added single runs in the fourth and three in the fifth before breaking the game open with a four-run sixth.

WVU Tech managed one hit in the contest, scoring its lone run in the sixth inning. Meghan Gill walked, stole second and eventually came around to score on an RBI walk by Kaylee Waddell.

Taylor Scott took the loss in the circle, working five innings with five strikeouts. Peyton Hudnall pitched the final inning in relief.

Game 2 – WVU Tech 14, Bluefield 13

The Golden Bears flipped the script in the nightcap, exploding for 18 hits and answering every Bluefield surge.

After Bluefield built a 6-0 lead through two innings, WVU Tech erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the second. Brenna Reedy tripled home a run, Olivia Barnett delivered a two-RBI single and the Golden Bears seized a 7-6 advantage.

Bluefield responded with a four-run fourth and added insurance late, carrying a 13-11 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

WVU Tech refused to fold.

Barnett opened the inning with a triple. Mia Valenzuela followed with a single, and Reedy doubled home two to tie the game at 13-13. With runners on and two outs, Tori Wells delivered the decisive blow, ripping a two-run double to left field to walk it off and secure the 15-13 victory.

Wells finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two doubles. Reedy went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Barnett added three hits including a triple. Kaylee Waddell scored three times and drove in two.

Taylor Scott earned the win in relief, closing the final inning to secure the comeback.
