PHILIPPI, West Virginia - Coming off a successful 2013-14 season, the men's swim team put on a dominating effort against NCAA DII and conference opponent Alderson Broaddus University, winning the meet Saturday, 154 – 50.
The meet started out with the both the A and B, 200 medley relays taking first and second. The "A" relay of juniors
Jack Cavanagh,
Gabriel Grauwde and
Kyle Polczynski and sophomore
Matheus Montarroyos clocked a time of 1:41.46 narrowly out touching the "B" relay of freshmen
Michael Grauwde,
Manuel Serrano Laguna,
Geoffroy Gauneau and
Lucas Malvar who finished in 1:41.86.
The men went on to win every event for the rest of the meet, starting with the 1000 Free where sophomore
Jaime Arevalo touched first with a 10:37.81 followed by freshman
Alexandre Quintao, 10:43.15. The 200 Free was won by Montarroyos, where he achieved a NAIA "A" cut, swimming a 1:47.58. Tech went 1 and 2 in the 50 Freestyle, with freshman
Jesus Ballesteros Peral winning in a time of 22.12 followed by Malvar with a 23.04. Ballesteros' 22.12 breaks the school record in the 50 Freestyle.
The 200 IM and 100 Fly were also a first and second place events for the Tech swimmers. Laguna took top honors in the 200 IM with a 2:02.59, out racing Cavanagh who swam a 2:04.49. Gauneau won the 100 Fly with a NAIA "A" cut and school record, swimming a 53.22, he was followed by Arevalo who swam a 55.66.
The 100 Freestyle was won by Quintao in a 49.40. The 100 Backstroke saw Tech go first and second yet again, Polczynski took top honors with a 58.99 followed by M. Grauwde who swam a 59.60.
Tech swept the 500 Freestyle with Montarroyos taking his second victory of the day with a 4:58.57, followed by Ballesteros in 5:10.66 while Arevalo claimed third with a 5:12.03.
The final individual event of the day saw veteran Cavanagh matched up again against Laguna in the 100 Breast. Laguna took top honors, swimming a time of 1:00.61, good enough for a NAIA "A" Cut. Cavanagh finished right behind him with a 1:02.22.
The 400 Freestyle Relay finished the day. The relay team of Quintao, Gauneau, G. Grauwde and Ballesteros crushed the field, swimming a time of 3:18.64 and beating the Alderson Broaddus relay by over 13 seconds.
Tech Swimming will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 10 and Saturday, Oct. 11 where they will be participating in the West Virginia State Games, held at Marshall University.
