WVU Tech Swimming Competes at Tech Tri-Meet

MONTGOMERY, West Virginia -
WVU Tech swimming had five first place finishes in the Tech Tri-Meet and the men's team defeated Union College Saturday, 148-113 in the WVU Tech Pool. The Golden Bears hosted Union and Fairmont State University. The men's squad fell to Fairmont State (143-117) and the women's team dropped competitions to both opponents, 162-64 and 113-76 respectively.

Here are the Golden Bear highlights for the meet:
 
  • Third place finish for the women in 200 Medley Relay (2:01.92), Fran Meyer, Kendra Monnin, Shannon Wiercioch and Rubhi Garcia-Mercado.
  • Sophomore Matheus Montarroyos finished third in the 1000 Freestyle (10:02.81) and the 500 Freestyle (4:56.60).
  • The 200 Medley Relay team for the men, Jack Cavanagh, Manuel Serrano Laguna, Geoffroy Gauneau and Alexandre Quintao finished second, 1:40.04
  • Quintao touched third in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:48.22.
  • Meyer took a first place finish in the 100 Backstroke (1:01.43) and 200 IM (2:16.46).
  • The women's 100 Breaststroke finished with Monnin in second (1:12.51).
  • Cavanagh also finished second in the 100 Breaststroke for the men (1:01.51).
  • For the men's 200 Butterfly, Gauneau touched first (1:59.07) and Jaime Arevalo finished third (2:00.21).
  • Garcia-Mercado swam the 50 Freestyle in 26.73 for a third place finish.
  • The 100 Freestyle was finished in 48.97 by Jesus Ballesteros Peral for second place.
  • Monnin scored a first place finish in the 200 Breaststroke (2:34.35).
  • Laguna (2:12.23) touched first and Cavanagh (2:15.60) second in the 200 Breaststroke.
  • Arevalo posted a third place finish in the 100 Butterfly, 54.61.
  • With a time of 2:01.15, Laguna finished second in the 200 IM while Gauneau touched third, 2:04.31.
  • The 400 Freestyle Relay team (Meyer, Garcia-Mercado, Monnin and Janay Wright-Parks) finished third, 3:54.70.
  • Swimming the 400 Freestyle Relay, Ballesteros, Quintao, Quentin Cooper and Monrarroyos in 3:13.64, Tech finished second.

The Golden Bears will now prepare for the Appalachian Conference Swim Championships February 12 in Christiansburg, Virginia.
