SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. – WVU Tech women's basketball locked in defensively and turned turnovers into points Saturday afternoon, rolling to a 73-42 River States Conference win at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods inside Hamilton Arena. The Golden Bears led wire to wire and move to 10-3 overall and 2-2 in RSC play, while the Pomeroys drop to 0-15 and 0-4.
The Golden Bears used a 9-0 first quarter run to build an 18-14 lead after 10 minutes, then broke the game open with an 18-6 second quarter that pushed the margin to 36-20 at the half. WVU Tech outscored SMWC 37-22 after the break and led by as many as 31 late in the fourth.
Golden Bear highlights
- Emily Wratchford provided a major spark off the bench, scoring a game high 15 points on 6-for-8 shooting with four rebounds, two assists and two steals in 15 minutes.
- Alaira Evans added 13 points, hitting 6 of 13 from the field and 1 of 2 from three while blocking two shots.
- Cadence Stewart filled the box score with eight points, a team high eight rebounds, five assists and four steals.
- Alexis Sexton finished with eight points and three assists, and Avery Lucas went a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor for eight points and three steals.
- Kyra Brown chipped in seven points and a game high five steals, while Maggie Boroski posted four points, two assists and two steals off the bench.
Team numbers
WVU Tech shot 47.1 percent from the field and held Saint Mary-of-the-Woods to 32.6 percent overall, including 25.0 percent from three. The Golden Bears forced 32 turnovers, turning them into 29 points and finished with a 20-6 edge in steals. Tech also owned a 44-24 advantage in points in the paint, a 17-0 margin in second chance points and outscored the SMWC bench 32-8 while narrowly winning the rebounding battle 36-34.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods was led by Abigail Parker and Talyssa Moody with 10 points each, while Haley Polston added seven points and six rebounds.
