GRAYSON, Ky. – WVU Tech women's basketball used a big fourth quarter to pick up its first River States Conference (RSC) win of the season, pulling away for a 78-67 road victory at Kentucky Christian on Tuesday evening.
The Golden Bears outscored the Knights 30-24 in the final period and improved to 9-3 overall and 1-2 in RSC play. Kentucky Christian dropped to 4-10 and 0-3 in the league.
Alexis Sexton poured in a team high 20 points to go with nine rebounds and three assists, going 7 for 15 from the field and 6 for 6 at the free throw line. Cadence Stewart followed with 17 points and seven rebounds, knocking down three three pointers and going 4 for 5 at the stripe.
Junior guard Kyra Brown gave WVU Tech a major lift on the perimeter, scoring 14 points on 4 for 6 shooting that included 3 of 4 from beyond the arc. She added four assists and three rebounds in 25 minutes. Freshman guard Maggie Boroski sparked the bench with nine points and five rebounds on 3 for 4 shooting.
The Golden Bears and Knights were tied 17-17 after the first quarter before WVU Tech created some separation in the second. Stewart and Sexton keyed a 14-10 frame that sent Tech to the locker room with a 31-27 lead.
Kentucky Christian stayed within striking distance in the third, but Tech still held a 48-43 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. The Golden Bears then found another gear offensively, pushing the margin into double digits behind shot making from Brown and steady work from Sexton and Stewart.
WVU Tech finished with 32 bench points and turned 15 points off turnovers into important separation down the stretch. The Golden Bears also held Kentucky Christian to 9 of 26 shooting from the three point line in the Knights' gym.
Bell Sparks led Kentucky Christian with a game high 19 points in the loss as the Knights fell to 0-3 in conference play.
