Golden Bears drop tight contest to Brescia

BECKLEY, W.Va. – WVU Tech women's basketball battled West Division leader Brescia down to the final possessions Saturday morning before falling 89-83 in a high-level River States Conference matchup at the Beckley Raleigh County Convention Center.

The Golden Bears matched Brescia shot for shot for much of the afternoon, tying the game 11 times and trading the lead eight times in a contest that featured 172 combined points. WVU Tech trailed 20-18 after the first quarter and used a 16-12 second period to take a 34-32 halftime edge.

The two teams exploded for 29 points apiece in the third quarter, with the Golden Bears going a perfect 13-for-13 at the free-throw line in the period to carry a 63-61 advantage into the fourth. Brescia answered with a 28-point fourth quarter, shooting 10-of-13 from the field in the final 10 minutes to secure the 89-83 result.

WVU Tech finished 27-of-63 (42.9%) from the floor and 6-of-15 (40.0%) from three, while knocking down 23-of-30 free throws (76.7%). The Golden Bears also generated 18 second-chance points and 32 bench points, highlighting their depth and effort across the rotation.

Golden Bear Highlights

Cadence Stewart led WVU Tech with 17 points, including a 9-for-9 performance at the free-throw line.

Alaira Evans added 15 points and seven rebounds, scoring all of her points in a strong third-quarter surge.

Alexis Sexton contributed 12 points and five rebounds, while Maggie Boroski and Emily Wratchford each chipped in nine off the bench.

WVU Tech outrebounded Brescia 37-36 and held a 32-26 advantage in bench scoring.

Conference Outlook

With the result, WVU Tech moves to 15-9 overall and 6-8 in River States Conference play. The Golden Bears remain in the mix in the RSC East Division as the regular season enters its final stretch. Brescia, a West Division contender, improves to 21-5 overall.
