A native of Clinton, Tennessee, Jim graduated from Clinton High School in 1987. While at Clinton, he played football and basketball, and was a three-year letterman and co-captain of the football team. He received All-Conference honors in 1985 and 1986.

Jim attended WVU Tech from 1987 to December 1991. He played tight end for the Golden Bears from 1987-1990, where he received All-Conference Honorable Mention in 1988, First Team All-Conference in 1989 and 1990, NAIA All-American Honorable Mention in 1989 and NAIA All-American in 1990. Jim remains one of the top all-time receivers for Tech.

Jim received his B.S. degree in Accounting in 1991. He also met his wife, Tammy, a 1992 graduate of Tech’s dental hygiene program, while attending Tech. Jim and Tammy have been married for 22 years and currently live in Knoxville, Tennessee, with their 15-year-old daughter, Hallie. Jim owns a CPA firm and an investment advisory practice.
